Lincoln traffic fatalities hit home with young driver

The past few months have shown that one of the most dangerous places you can be in Lincoln County is on the road. The emotional pain from these fatalities resonates with almost every citizen of the county in some way. Whether you were a family member, co-worker, friend or acquaintance to a victim, it's likely that you've been impacted to some extent. Since the beginning of 2009, there have been 20 fatalities due to collisions. I, as well as many other fellow Lincoln Countians, find myself asking the questions, "What is causing this?" and most importantly, "How can we put an end to it?"

Stanford revises budget

"It's not often that a city council meeting ends in applause," said Stanford Mayor Bill Miracle after last week's first reading of the city's revised budget, and Tuesday night's second reading was a repeat performance with leaders of the city's largest businesses applauding when the council narrowly voted to accept a budget with no increase in the occupational tax.

County rejects tax increase optionm

The Lincoln County Fiscal Court voted unanimously against increasing property taxes in the next fiscal year beyond the standard compensatory rate. The court's options were to accept the compensatory rate of 8.9 percent, add an additional 4 percent to the existing rate or set another rate, subject to voter recall, but the last two choices would have required publishing public announcements and scheduling public hearings all before the Aug. 31 deadline to have the tax rate established.

RIP: Daniel Tchornemoretz

Anyone who was buddies with musician Frank Zappa, arrested and briefly imprisoned by the KGB and ranked number 17 on Richard Nixon's enemies list, is OK by me, but Dan Schorr, legendary newsman and First Amendment advocate, was far more than the sum of his associates; as a senior news analyst for National Public Radio for the last two decades, he was a constant companion, a reassuring voice and a model for an aspiring newsman. I didn't always share his opinions, but his dogged reporting was spotless.
