Something of inestimable value

September 16, 2009

We rose to greet a beautiful mid-summer morning, and everything seemed just right. After gathering around the table for breakfast, we bowed our heads, as we always do, for the usual blessing.

That morning in a simple prayer, I expressed gratitude for a good night of refreshing sleep and the blessed gift of a beautiful new day. Then, I said, “And lead us through this day.”

Although I said nothing about it to others, that simple request led to a beatific moment for me. By the time the words were out of my mouth, my mind took me back many years to the time when I was a very small boy. Vividly, I remembered that, at that point in my life, I liked to follow my father, and I went with him almost every place he went.

Since he walked almost everywhere, I would reach up and place my little hand in his big hand. He led me, and I followed him everywhere, and I felt perfectly comfortable doing so. No hill was too steep, no road was too rough, and no night was too dark for me to accompany my father. All I needed was the feel of my hand in his hand. Then, with absolutely no fear, I could go anywhere, for I had absolute trust in him. Without a doubt, I knew that he would guide me, protect me and see that I got to the proper destination. And I was never disappointed.

That experience with my father prepared me for something else in life that is of inestimable value. Early in life when a good Sunday school teacher, probably, taught me that there is a heavenly Father to whom, in all circumstances of life, I can look for guidance, I had no difficulty accepting it. When I place my hand in His hand; that is, when I trust Him, and follow where He leads me, I am never disappointed.
