G.W. Catlett found out what it feels like to be famous Thursday night.
Catlett, a fifth-grader at Highland Elementary School who formerly went to Jennie Rogers Elementary, was among about 30 students from around Kentucky who had a piece of art displayed in the VSA arts of Kentucky Student Traveling Art Show.
The art show, “A Matter of Perspective” is an annual competition for students across the state with disabilities and is displayed at different schools in the state. The show recently was on display for a week at Jennie Rogers. Students, parents and community members visited Thursday to see the artwork. It took Catlett a couple of months to create his piece.
“Hanging from Balloons” is the title of Catlett’s drawing. It features a likeness of Catlett hidden in a cluster of different colored balloons.
“I just wanted to be in the sky,” Catlett said.
Jennie Rogers art teacher Elaine Hearne said at 10 years old, G.W. Catlett is one of the youngest artists to be featured.
For Catlett’s mother, Rose Catlett, a Lincoln County resident, Thursday night was the first time she saw his picture. Rose Catlett said she was very proud of her son when she found out his work would be featured in the art show.
“He did a very good job,” Rose Catlett said. She plans to hang the picture in her home after the art show.
Jennie Rogers Principal Gina Bernard said when she looks at G.W. Catlett’s drawing, she feels happy.
Each of the balloons are different colors and some have special designs, including one G. W. Catlett said is his lucky rabbit’s foot.
Although Hearne submitted Catlett’s piece to the show, all the work was done outside classroom time.
Hearne always looks for students interested in submitting art work to contests. She thought of G.W. Catlett because in the few years she has had him as a student, he has shown her how hard he can work.
“G.W. has come a long way as a student of mine,” she said.
For “Hanging from Balloons” G.W. Catlett had to utilize a few skills, including overlapping, which can be difficult, Hearne said.
“It’s a pretty nice honor for him to be selected,” she said.
