45th District Tournament opens Monday
February 17, 2010
It took the flip of a coin to determine the top-seeded boys team in the upcoming 45th District Tournament at Danville High School.
Lincoln County (15-9) and Boyle County (15-8) both swept Garrard County and Danville in the regular-season district schedule but split with each other to finish tied at 5-1.
Steve Ralston, LCHS athletics director, said ties are usually broken by looking at common 12th Region opponents.
Boyle County claimed the top seed because the Rebels defeated Mercer County at Mercer and Lincoln lost at Mercer. But Lincoln called for the coin toss, citing a Patriot victory at West Jessamine. The Rebels lost at West Jessamine.
Lincoln, the defending district champion, got the coin toss, but Boyle won the flip, earning the number one seed and a first-round bye in the tournament that gets under way Monday, Feb. 22.
In the boys’ opener on Monday, Garrard (2-24, 0-6) will play Kentucky School for the Deaf (9-8, 0-0) at 6 p.m. Boyle will play the winner of that game on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m., with Lincoln to follow in a 7:45 p.m. game with host Danville (10-13, 2-4). The championship game will be played Friday, Feb. 26, at 7:45 p.m.
A coin toss was also needed in the girls’ 45th District brackets, with Boyle Co. (12-13) and Danville (13-11) holding identical district records of 1-5 to tie for third.
Boyle won that coin toss, too.
Danville will take on top-seeded and defending champion Lincoln County (19-4, 6-0) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Boyle will play Garrard (16-5, 4-2) at 7:45 p.m. the same night. The girls’ title game will be played at 6 p.m. Friday.
