5-year-old dies from injuries in wreck at Hustonville

March 10, 2010

By David Brock

A community and school are mourning a 5-year-old girl who died of injuries received in a two-car collision last Wednesday morning a mile north of Hustonville.

Ryllie Z’anne Vonlinger of Hustonville was pronounced dead at 9:30 a.m. at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center by Boyle County Coroner Dr. James Ramey.

Her mother, Amy Vonlinger, 31, was taking her to school when the crash occurred. Ryllie also was the daughter of Rollie Wayne Vonlinger.

State police said it appeared the Dodge Intrepid driven by Amy Vonlinger of Hustonville was eastbound on Ky. 2141 when it attempted to merge onto U.S. 127 and it was struck on the passenger side by a northbound sport-utility vehicle driven by Gordon Kaiser, 38, of Hustonville.

Amy Vonlinger was flown to University of Kentucky Hospital with multiple injuries.

Kaiser was not treated for any injuries following the collision.

Authorities said visibility on the stretch of U.S. 127, which has a speed limit of 55, could have been more difficult because of the silver color of the SUV against the rock outcroppings through which the road passes.

The collision remains under investigation by Trooper Rodney Wren and Sgt. Starlin Hacker.

Ryllie Z’anne Vonlinger attended kindergarten at Hustonville Elementary School. Principal Marilyn Hafley said the little girl, whom friends and teachers called Z’anne or Z, was bright, happy and always an example for other students.

“It is just a very hard day,” Hafley said. “We have blue lines painted down the hallways of our school, and she always walked down that line. She wanted to do what was asked of her and tried hard to get everyone else to do the right thing.”

Hafley said counselors were brought in from around the district to talk to students and staff for the next several days.

“My most recent memory of her is one that was so much like her, walking with her mom, looking up at her with a big smile, eagerly telling her about her day,” Hafley said.

Visitation will be Friday, Mar. 19 from 3-9 p.m. and the funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford.
