When asked, out of town runners will always make the same comment about the 5K courses around Stanford, “Hilly!” At last Saturday’s Run for Independence 5K, they also added “Hot!” or “Sticky!” or both.
This was the fourth running of the Run for Independence and race organizer Sandy Swett was a little disappointed in the turnout. “Let’s just say I have lots of t-shirts to sell. Lots.”
It might have been the oppressively hot and humid weather, or tight financial times, but only 82 runners registered for the event that drew 183 last year. There was however, a lot of interest in the race from out-of-town runners, including the first place winners in the men’s and women’s divisions.
The race leader was Ryan New, 28, from Danville who covered the 3.1 mile course in 18:17. New had never run in Stanford before and he was the first to make the “hilly” comment during his warm-down.
The first woman to cross the line was Lexington resident Amy Carwile at 20:58. Carwile, a professional violinist from Lexington had run the race last year and returned because she thought Stanford was a pretty town to run through and a lot of fun.
Hot on the heels of New was Dalton Leet, 17, at 18:50, who was the first runner to cross the finish line for Team Jay Rebels. The eight member (plus a baby) Rebels’ team took home the team trophy for the second year in a row.
Proceeds from the race benefit Stanford’s Main Street Program.
