STANFORD — Both the Lincoln girls and boys tennis teams picked up wins this past week, with both victories coming against our neighbors to the south in Pulaski County.
The Lady Patriot netters earned their first win of the season, 3-2, Thursday at Southwestern while the Patriots collected their 5-4 win Tuesday at home over Pulaski County.
All of the Lady Patriot wins in the victory over host Southwestern came in doubles play, with the teams of Adie Hogue/Chandler Otto, Raelyn Amon/Kaitlynn Wilks and Grace Muse/Alyea Towle all netting wins.
Hogue and Otto began the doubles sweep at the one seed, beating Southwestern’s top team of Kaitlyn Munsey and Paige Daniels 8-2. Amon and Wilks netted their win at two, besting Taylor Munsey and Alexia Reichenbach 8-2 while Muse and Towle defeated Southwestern’s Madison Jordan and Shelby Watson 8-2 at three.
“They’ve been doing well,” Lincoln coach Allen Lewis said of the Lady Pats. “We have so many new girls and they are improving every match.”
Exhibition matches do not count in team scores, but the Lady Patriots went 2-0 in those matches at Southwestern. Emily Byrd and Josey Norden teamed up for a win and the team of Kaycie Bandura and Logan Godbey bested two Southwestern boys in a co-ed match.
Patriot doubles players Kade Bandura, Carter Story, Jacob Baird and Lee Amon got Lincoln off to a winning start in Tuesday’s doubleheader with visiting Pulaski County then Story, Baird and Amon swept the fourth- through sixth-seeded singles matches to secure the 5-4 win.
Bandura and Story teamed up to defeat Chase Nelson and Aiden Vanhoser 6-2 at two then Baird and Amon outlasted Pulaski’s Zach Carter and Ethan Carter 7-6 (10-8) in a tiebreaker at three to give Lincoln a 2-1 edge going into singles play.
Story then backed up his doubles win with a 6-1 defeat of Pulaski’s Jason Hines at the fourth seed in singles, Baird blanked Grant Kerns 6-0 at five, then Amon defeated Z. Carter 6-3 at six for the match win.
The score 5-4 would stand for both the boys and girls against Pulaski County, with the visiting Lady Maroons edging the Lady Patriots in the girls’ match.
Picking up wins for the Lady Patriots were, in singles, Logan Godbey and Maggie Peck and, in doubles, the teams of Raelyn Amon/Wilks and Emily Byrd/Abby Hale.
Godbey beat Pulaski’s Jamicyn Weaver 6-4 at five and Peck won 6-3 over Laura Estes at six. The score was 6-3 in both of LIncoln’s doubles wins with Amon/Wilks beating Meredith Oakes/Jenessa Sroufe at two and Byrd/Hale winning over Shaylin Estes/Catherine Cook at three.
“Both boys and girls played a great match tonight,” Lewis said of the Pulaski doubleheader. “We always have a very tight match against Pulaski. The boys got a strong win after losing the top three seeds in singles. Lee Amon shined tonight. He won a tiebreaker in doubles and then won the deciding match singles. Kaitlynn wilks has been a very nice addition to the girls since basketball season. She is so athletic, I am excited about having her for the next three years.”
In the Patriots’ 3-2 loss at Southwestern, the doubles team of Roland Taylor and Ryan Montgomery defeated Max Brainard and Josh Carey 8-1 at one and Kade Bandura and Story topped Harrison Dalton and Jon Long 8-2 at two.
