DANVILLE — Lincoln County golfer Lawson Hon extended his season Tuesday by qualifying for state in the Region 4 Tournament played at the Danville Country Club.
However, it took extended play to earn the state berth, with Hon and three other players all tied at 79 at the end of the 18-hole tournament.
With just two of the seven qualifying spots open, the LCHS sophomore had to finish in the top two in a playoff to advance to next week’s state tourney at Bowling Green Country Club.
And he did.
Hon and Washington County junior Logan Wilson claimed the two spots in the playoff.
The seven top individual players not on the region championship team advance to state. Will Koger, a Bardstown junior, shot a 73 to advance, and Clay Anderson, a Russell County junior, Jack Briese, a Boyle County junior, and William Carr, a Boyle sophomore, all moved on with a round of 76. Three Boyle players will be on course at Bowling Green, with Colten Wilson, a sophomore, also moving on with a 77.
The day’s low round came from the winning team, as Hayes Mason, a Taylor County junior, led the Cardinals to victory with a 68 to earn him medalist honors.
The Cardinals advance as a team after posting a four-man score of 283. Freshman Luke Coyle fired a 69, senior Rhett Cox shot a 71, and junior Adam Kehoe and senior Ethan Anderson both finished with a 75.
