LANCASTER — Kelsey Perkins threw a one-hit shutout to lead the second-seeded Garrard County softball team to a 5-0 win against third-seeded Lincoln County Monday in the 45th District Tournament semifinal round at Garrard County Middle School.
The Lady Lions (25-4) extended their win streak to 12 consecutive games with the win over the visiting Lady Patriots.
Perkins faced only the minimum in five of the seven innings pitched in the complete-game win. She struck out 10 Lincoln batters and walked zero while allowing just one hit.
Lady Pat Lydia Rice connected for the lone hit to lead off the top of the sixth inning. She moved to second base before Perkins got out of the inning on a ground out and back-to-back strikeouts.
The only other time Perkins faced more than three Lincoln batters came in the top of the fifth inning when Hailee Reed reached on a fielding error with one out. She only got as far as second base, as well, with the inning ending on a pop out and strikeout.
The Lady Lions scored the run they needed for the win in the bottom of the third inning. Brynne Galloway reached on a one-out walk off Lady Pat starter Savannah Robbins and advanced to third on a Fran Montgomery double to right field. After a lineout by Kelsi Moss which was grabbed by Lincoln shortstop Maddy Boyle, Lincoln coach Jordan Ward intentionally walked Katy Pozzuto to load the bases. Perkins then drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Galloway for a 1-0 lead.
All of Garrard’s scoring came over two innings, with the Lady Lions following the one-run third inning with a four-run fourth. Kara Mosier led off with a walk, moved to second on an Addison Pevley single then came on home on a Galloway sac out. Garrard had runners on first and third after Kyla Bell reached on an error and Montgomery got on with a single. Both runners completed their trip around the bases when Moss connected for a three-run home run to left field to give the Lady Lions a 5-0 lead.
Montgomery, Moss, Pevley and Grace Freeman accounted for all nine of Garrard’s hits, with Montgomery leading her team, going 3-for-4. Pevley and Freeman were both 2-for-3 and Moss was 2-for-4.
Lincoln put up two pitchers against Garrard in the district matchup, with Whitney Coulter coming on in relief.
The Lady Lions went on to win the district title, dominating top-seeded Boyle County 12-4 in Wednesday’s championship game.
