Correction: the motion to close McKinney Elementary at the end of the school year was made by Board Member Win Smith, and seconded by Board Member Ricky Lane. The original article stated the motion to close the school was made by Lane.
McKinney Elementary is set to close at the end of this school year following a vote by the Lincoln County School Board at its monthly meeting Thursday.
One hundred twenty-nine students currently attend McKinney Elementary. There are also about 19 preschool students.
The board heard emotional testimony from several people opposed to the closure, including school administrators, staff, students and students’ parents, and some who were in favor of the proposed move, but ultimately voted 3-1 in favor.
Board member Win Smith made the motion to close the school and he and board member Ricky Lane and chair Tom Blankenship all voted to close McKinney. Board member Alan Hubble, whose motion to table any vote on closure until McKinney had representation on the board died without a second, was the only no vote.
