Joe Sterling Grimes, Jr., 93, formerly of Louisville, KY, died peacefully on April 25th, 2023 at the Thomson Hood Veterans Center. Eldest son of Joe Sterling Grimes and Dorothy Susan Newland Grimes, he was born in Stanford in Lincoln County, KY and raised on the family farm in Preachersville. He attended Stanford High School and the University of Kentucky, graduating with a degree in Agriculture. He served four years in the United States Air Force, with two years of service in Morocco. Joe worked in commercial and residential real estate, eventually owning his own firm in Springfield, IL. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Pendennis Club, and Second Presbyterian Church. He loved to dance, and played clarinet and the occasional piano duet with his musical family. In 1969, he married Joan Hager, the love of his life. Born only hours apart, they spent over 50 years together, traveling, collecting antiques, laughing, dancing and enjoying life. Joe is survived by his brothers Richard Newland Grimes and William Thomas Grimes, his sister Susanne Grimes Frank, his niece Rachel Grimes (Alec Johnson), nieces Dana Frank and Susanne Frank, nephew Nicholas John Frank IV (Carmen Sanchez Frank), and nieces Susan Grimes Sullivan (Jon Howard) and Nancy Grimes Miracle (Don Miracle). He is preceded in death by his wife Joan “Jody” Hager Grimes, and his nephew Edward Sterling Grimes.
A visitation will be held from 10 AM – 12 PM at Pearson’s Funeral Home, Louisville, KY, on Friday, May 12, with graveside committal to follow at Cave Hill Cemetery.
