To help serve the community, Lincoln County Fire Station 5 has scheduled May 11 as a community-wide “helping hands day.”

The firefighters of Station Five will be serving as handymen to help those in the Waynesburg community with odd jobs around their homes.

“We want to give back,” said Station 5 Fire Chief Griffin Harness. “I want to get word out there especially to the older community that doesn’t have Facebook. We want to have 20 or 30 jobs to do that day. We are planning on having several lawnmowers, ladders, and everything ready to go. We want to help even if is a simple job like taking Christmas lights down.”

Firefighters will be doing odd jobs and chores such as clearing limbs, cleaning gutters, and light home maintenance. Harness will be taking applications for jobs to be performed that day.

“We always show up for the bad so we wanted to show up for something good,” Harness said. “Our motto has always been ‘protect and serve’ and I think we do good at protecting but our serving lacks a little bit. We are there for the community and this is a way we can give back to it. We are all a bunch of young guys so all of my officers came together and said let’s do this.”

Harness hopes to make the helping hands day a regular occurrence.

“We plan to do it every year if it is a success. Especially in the spring for spring cleanup,” Harness said.
