STANFORD – When 72-year-old Jack McNew woke up he found that all of the tires on his vehicles had been flattened. McNew then walked to the out-building on his property where his son was staying, knocked on the door and when it opened, he shot and killed his son.

That’s according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office who responded to the scene at about 12:06 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9 after the father called and said he shot his son, Jackie McNew.

When Lt. Michael Mullins arrived at the scene, located in the 4400 block of U.S. Hwy. 27 South, he made contact with the father and then located the victim inside of the outbuilding.

“The victim was critically wounded and EMS arrived on scene,” the arrest citation states.

Jackie McNew was prepared to be flown to the University of Kentucky medical center but coded in flight and was taken to Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital where Lincoln County Coroner Farris Marcum pronounced him dead at about 1:30 p.m.

Marcum said the incident occurred at a residence located about three-fourths of the way up Halls Gap Road on the right.

McNew used a 9mm and killed his son with multiple gunshot wounds, Marcum said.

The son’s body will be transported to Frankfort for an autopsy, he said.

According to the arrest citation Jack McNew told Mullins he woke up and noticed that his tires had been flattened on his vehicles.

“He got upset and went to the outbuilding where the victim was staying. When the victim opened the door, the above shot the victim with a handgun,” the citation states. “After the victim fell, he shot again another 2-3 times to make sure he was dead.”

McNew told law enforcement he “didn’t want anyone to see his son acting like this. He put him out of his misery.”

“Above (McNew) called 911 but did not offer aid because ‘he knew in his heart that the victim was dead,’” the citation states.

Multiple shell casing were found inside and outside the outbuilding.

McNew was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary and murder.

He was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center. As of 4 p.m. Monday he had not been booked yet.
