Reported shots fired at cars causes brief panic in LC

HUSTONVILLE – With an armed active shooter still at large in Laurel County Sunday night, reported shots fired at cars in Lincoln County caused a brief panic.

The situation turned out to be two juveniles shooting a high-powered pellet gun in the direction of vehicles, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the 700 block of Mt. Salem Road Sunday evening for a report of shots being shot at vehicles.

“Upon the arrival of units, a perimeter was secured,” the LCSO press release states. “Units then made contact with two juveniles. It was determined that the juveniles were shooting a high-powered pellet gun in the direction of the roadway. As a result, two vehicles were shot.”

No injuries were reported.

The juveniles have been charged with criminal mischief and wanton endangerment.

The incident caused panic in the area as word spread across social media.

School districts across the region were in the process of canceling classes Monday due to an active shooter in Laurel County who was still at large Sunday evening.

Lincoln County Schools was among several districts that cancelled classes Monday as a safety precaution while

law enforcement agents were continuing to search for the suspect, 32-year-old Joseph Couch, who shot a dozen vehicles on I-75 and injured five people Saturday afternoon.

Couch fired a total of 20 to 30 rounds from a wooded area near the highway, at exit 49 about nine miles north of London.

As of Monday at 4 p.m., the search for Couch continued.
