FRANKFORT, Ky. (KT) – As Kentuckians continue their clean-up from the historic flooding which took place earlier this month, people in much of the state will have their eyes to the sky again starting on Tuesday, as there are two chances for severe weather, according to the National Weather Service.

The Storm Prediction says the part of Kentucky that is north and west of a line from Bowling Green to Ashland is under a slight risk of severe weather, especially Tuesday afternoon and evening. The greatest threat is a 15-30 percent chance of seeing damaging thunderstorm winds of 58 miles per hour or higher, and a  5-15 percent chance of hail one inch in diameter or greater. The tornado threat is negligible.

Areas north and east of Kentucky have a better chance of experiencing severe weather, as cities including Columbus, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Rochester, New York have an enhanced risk. Again, high winds are forecast to be the main issue, with large hail and tornado chances remaining relatively low.

Forecaster Tom Reaugh with the Weather Service Office in Louisville notes, “I am a bit concerned about the flash flood potential, especially if repeated rounds of convection continue into Wednesday as the convectively reinforced cold front becomes more parallel to the upper flow.”

Reaugh says another severe weather threat could take place Thursday afternoon and evening. ”Pockets of damaging wind look to be the main concern here. Can`t rule out a possible isolated tornado threat, but too early to get into the details with lots of weather to get through before we get to that point. We`ll also have to be mindful of already elevated rainfall totals being agitated by more strong convection with this final wave. Isolated flood concerns will likely remain.”

He adds, rain chances end Friday, and a pleasant weekend appears to be in store. “High pressure builds in with slightly below normal temperatures in the low and mid 70s each day. The modest temps and plenty of sunshine should make it a great weekend for outdoor activities.”
