Blanton, Bastin win inaugural Fly Sam Fly 5K

STANFORD — Since the inaugural Fly Sam Fly 5K was run in memory of such a young athlete – Sam Singleton was only 13 at the time of his death in June – it was only fitting that the winners of the male and female divisions were both young athletes themselves.
Brody Blanton of Waynesburg, an 11-year-old runner, finished at the front of the field of 204 runners/walkers Sunday, crossing the finish line of the 5K (3.1-mile) race in a time of 18:38.
Abigail Bastin of Stanford, a 10-year-old former teammate of Singleton’s, took the female division win. She covered the distance in 21:28. She placed ninth overall.
The top five runners in both divisions were all 18 or under.
In the male division, Trevor Lay, 18, of Harrodsburg was the runner-up in 18:55, Brad Adams, 15, of Stanford, another of Singleton’s teammates, ran third in 20:01, Jalen Newton, 16, of Versailles ran fourth in 20:11 and Gabe Singleton, 16, Sam’s brother, was fifth in 20:27.
In the female division, Haley Blevins, 16, was the runner-up in 21:41, nosing out third-place runner Clayra Darnell, 13, of Harrodsburg, and fourth-place runner McKenzie Settles, 15, of Stanford, who each had the same time. The fifth-place female was Alexis Slone, 13, of Waynesburg, who finished in 24:47.
Settles and Slone were both teammates of Sam.
