Lincoln County High School’s quest for state titles in the National Archery in the Schools (NASP)/International Bowhunting Organization (IBO) 3D Challenge and NASP State Tournament fell short Friday and Saturday as the local team finished third behind champion Anderson County and runner-up Bullitt Central in the 3D Challenge and seventh in the traditional shoot.

However, LCHS did not leave the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center in Louisville without a state title in hand. While the Lincoln teams were earning their top 10 finishes, McKenzie Settles, an LCHS freshman, swept the girls individual state titles in the NASP/IBO 3D Challenge, placing first out of 180 high school girls, first out of 60 9th-grade girls and first out of 408 girls overall. 

In the 3D Challenge, archers shoot at six lifelike foam targets depicting various game animals. The 3D targets are set in a diagonal line from 10 to 15 meters and the scoring rings are the same size and shape of the rings on standard NASP bullseye targets.

Settles shot a 293 (24 tens) out of 300 to claim her three titles and to finish as Lincoln’s top scorer overall in the competition. The 293 was also good enough to place her fourth overall among all 3D Challenge archers. Settles was one of only two females to place in the top 10 of both girls and boys combined. Maura Dean, a senior on the champion Anderson County team, placed eighth overall with a 291. Anderson’s Henry Thompson won the overall title with a 298, Hopkins County Central’s T Sanchez was runner-up with a 296 and Model Laboratory’s Joshua Smith was third with a 294.

Lincoln had three archers to finish in the Top 10 in the 3D Challenge. Jacob Holtzclaw, a sophomore, finished sixth overall with a 292 (23 tens). He was fourth in high school boys and first in the 10th-Grade boys division. Roby Mullins, a senior, placed seventh overall with a 292 (22 tens). He was second in the 12th-Grade boys division.

Anderson County won the team title with a 1737. Bullitt Central was runner-up with a 1709 and Lincoln took third with a 1707. Lafayette finished fourth with a 1694 and Logan County rounded out the top five with a 1683.

Settles, Holtzclaw and Mullins were also Lincoln’s top scorers in the NASP Traditional State Tournament – but this time in a different order. 

Mullins, who finished second in the 12th-Grade Boys division, posted Lincoln’s top score in the traditional bullseye tourney, shooting a 294 (24 tens). Holtzclaw finished right behind Mullins in second for the team with a 292 (22 tens) and Settles was one point back of Holtzclaw at 291 (21 tens). 

In the traditional shoot, each competitor shoots 15 arrows at targets from 10 meters and 15 more from 15 meters for a possible score of 300. 

The LCHS team shot a 3402 overall to finish seventh out of 106 teams. Madison Central won the team title with a 3438, Bullitt Central was second with 3429, Muhlenberg County East was third with 3409, Henderson County was fourth with 3408 and Lafayette rounded out the top five with 3407.

Three Lincoln County archery teams came away from the state shoot with Top 10 finishes, with the Lincoln County Middle School archery team also performing well in the NASP Traditional State Tournament. The team posted a score of 3306 to place eighth out of 109 teams.

Emma Patterson had Lincoln Middle’s high score of 288 (20 tens). The LCMS eighth-grader was fifth overall out of 436 archers in her age division.

The annual NASP state tournaments drew a record 6,504 students from 396 schools across the state.

Students from three Lincoln elementaries also participated in the state tournament. Stanford Elementary competed as a single team and archers from Highland Elementary and Waynesburg Elementary participated as a combined team.
