FRANKFORT, Ky. (KT) – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Is opening more Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) to aid Kentuckians who have suffered losses in the three Presidential major disaster areas, due to the severe weather and flooding that occurred in February, April and May.
FEMA is offering a wide variety of help to people affected by the severe storms, straight-line winds and tornadoes from May 16-17.
Homeowners and renters in Caldwell, Laurel, Pulaski, Russell, Trigg and Union counties who were affected by the May tornadoes on may be able to receive financial assistance from FEMA. You may be eligible for assistance for displacement, serious needs, temporary lodging, basic home repairs, personal property losses and other uninsured disaster-related expenses.
Every homeowner or renter who suffered damage or loss is encouraged to apply. FEMA can provide money to eligible applicants for help with serious needs, paying for a temporary place to live, home repairs and other needs not covered by insurance. The deadline to apply is July 23.
As of May 27, FEMA has approved more than$16.4 million for the April severe storms and record flooding in housing and other types of assistance to more than 2,000Kentucky households. More applications are being processed daily.
Kentucky survivors of the April storms have until June 25 to apply.
Regarding the February disaster, FEMA has approved more than $44.3 million in housing and other types of assistance to over 6,900Kentucky households.
While the application period for February Storms closed on May 25, FEMA can still help if you have questions or need to provide documents.
There are several ways to apply for benefits from FEMA:
–Apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov.
–Visit any Disaster Recovery Center. To find a center close to you, go to fema.gov/DRC, or text DRC along with your Zip Code to 43362 (Example: “DRC 29169”).
–Use the FEMA mobile app.
–Call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. It is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Eastern Time. Help is available in many languages. If you use a relay service, such as Video Relay Service (VRS), captioned telephone or other service, give FEMA your number for that service.
In addition to FEMA, the Small Business Administration (SBA) also has personnel on hand at the DRCs. The SBA provides low interest loans to individuals and businesses that suffered losses.
